Christmas During the War in Vietnam

Buck

Most of us are braving traffic and crowds to do that last-minute shopping.  Many of us think fondly of white Christmases and snow, of logs on the fire and roasting chestnuts.  These Soldiers braved bullets and bombs.  They spent Christmas in steamy climates.  Pause a moment to think of the Soldiers serving overseas and away from home this Christmas.

A great disappointment of my 30+ years in the military is that I never had the opportunity to see Bob Hope in concert.  Bob Hope is a real hero.  He never concerned himself with the politics of the war.  Wherever Soldiers served, Hope was there (pun intended).  Bob Hope spent many, many years having Christmas dinner with the troops and bringing a little joy to break up the monotony of the war.

  1. These are nice tributes Buck! I was lucky enough to be a small part of the Bob Hope show at the Academy when he held his show there in spring 1981. I had just joined the Rabble Rousers (yup I was) and we had a part in the opening of the show (there was a slide for life at Michie Stadium where we caught another guy – I was on national TV for like 3 seconds). Because we were in the show we got to go to the after-show party at the Thayer, where I got to meet Bob Hope (very nice), Sugar Ray Leonard (had great boxing stories and was awesome), Brooke Shields (who was probably 13 so not that interesting), and Marie Osmond (she was gorgeous) and I think Helen Hayes? Anyways, it was a hoot and one of the reasons I supported the USO at my golf tournament and otherwise. Great messages – I will be sharing on my Blog and Facebook. Merry Christmas!
